Knowing God More: 10 Things That are Not in His Nature

Out of all the things that you will learn on your journey of faith, knowing God more each day is crucial to keeping your faith vital and strong and so you can make Him known, too!

Think about it: If you don’t know who God is, or if you are unsure of His character and nature, how will you be able to tell anyone else?

The world needs Jesus – you’ve seen it for yourself.

Of course, knowing God completely is impossible, because He is more complex and multi-faceted than the human mind can comprehend, but even so, He wants to reveal Himself to you more and more for the rest of your life.

That is why you must seek the Lord daily in His Word, commune with Him in prayer and dwell in His presence through worship. There is no other way to know the Lord more than to seek Him and find Him in new revelation over and over.

Knowing God More is a Lifelong Journey

God gave His Word and His Holy Spirit to His people to quicken that Word to clarify, provide wisdom and understanding. Are you disappointed with God because of something you’ve gone through?

You can trust that God is GOOD because He doesn’t cause bad things and then call them “good”.

The Lord repurposes bad things from Satan with His good purpose and works them out for your good, (Romans 8:28) but He doesn’t partner with evil nor does He use evil as His method of accomplishing good.

He’s as worthy now as He ever was, and this is why knowing God more must be the focus of your faith journey.

There is no other way to know the Lord than to seek Him and find Him over and over, all the days of your life.

Yet, as much as the Lord wants you to know Him- He wants to know you.

Even though He already knows everything, His desire is that you continue to invite Him in so that He can continually reveal Himself to you and show you who you are through the revelation of His Holy Spirit.

The whole point of why He called you is to know Him and to make Him known!

But just as important as knowing God more by learning who He is, knowing God more means also learning who God is not.

Knowing God More: 10 Things That are Not in His Nature

God is nothing like humankind.

  • He doesn’t think like a human does.
  • He doesn’t define anything like a human does.
  • He doesn’t exist in human timeframes.
  • He doesn’t obey any human laws of science.
  • He doesn’t regard human logic, demands, nor threats.

“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He spoken, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? (Numbers 23:9)

So many times, believers define God based on their own experiences, but that is wrong thinking! God defines Himself and if you want to know Him more, you can only find those definitions in His Word.

The Lord takes action on “all things according to the counsel of His own will.” (Ephesians 1:11). That is why Jesus prayed, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

It’s better and more effective to find out what God is going to do than it is to tell God the plans you want and expect Him to make it happen for you.

The Lord exists in eternity, which is beyond human understanding. So, when you are waiting on God for something, and it seems like the time is winding down or the deadline is approaching, you must stand firm on God’s Word.

Remember, the Lord watches over His Word to see carried out. (Jeremiah 1:1) If the Lord has given you a promise, He WILL see its fulfillment – and yes… even if you do not see it in your lifetime.

“The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness. But He is patient with us, because He does not want any to perish, but all to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

Hebrews 11 shows that plenty of believers died without receiving the promise they held onto, but they refused to doubt in the Lord’s ability to fulfillment.

Think about this: Elisha asked for a “double portion” of Elijah’s anointing, but when he died, Elisha had only accomplished 13 miracles. It was after his death that the 14th miracle occurred – a dead man raised to life who encountered his bones in a cave! (see 2 Kings 13:20-21)

You can trust the Lord.

The world is filled with evil, as you already know. Christians are murdered in public. Children are dismembered in their mother’s womb. The old or ill are put to sleep like dogs. There are wars, starvation, and crimes enough to keep the world suffering into the end of days.

So, where is the justice for the believer? How do you reconcile the bad things in the world with God’s power to stop them?

“…for God is not unjust so as to forget your work and labor of love that you have shown for His name, in that you have ministered to the saints and continue ministering.” (Hebrews 6:10)

In Romans 12:19-20 (MEV), Paul wrote:

“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to God’s wrath, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine. I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

The truth is that God defines “justice” by His own parameters, not yours. It is His will that “none should die but that all should have everlasting life.” (John 3:16-17) So, He remains patient and long-suffering, knowing that because of sin many more will suffer from sin until He returns, and that eternal life is the hope believers must cling to.

When life gets really hard, confusing, dark, and scary, the enemy will tempt your flesh to wonder if God is truly good. Plenty of believers think that God causes bad things to happen in order to show Himself as “good” – but that is a misunderstanding of Scripture.

God does not need ANYTHING to create such a contrast – He is good regardless of anything else. And nowhere in the Bible does it say the Lord causes “evil”. In fact, there is no darkness nor shadows in Him; He is LIGHT. (James 1:17, 1 John 1:5, John 1:5)

“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthians 14:33)

But what about this? In Isaiah 45:7 the Lord said, “I form the light and create darkness; I make peace and create calamity; I, the Lord, do all these things.”

Remember this: The Lord owes *nothing* to the fallen world. He gave them everything, including His own Son! If the Lord needs to create calamity, it is not against you, His child. The fallen world will always be against God because of their idolatry of sin – and calamity exists there.

The Lord was referring to the calamity that is created in contrast to His PEACE – because the fallen world exists apart from God’s presence, from God’s power, from God’s peace, protection and from His promises.

  • Life can be bad
  • People can be bad
  • The enemy is bad

GOD IS GOOD.

The world changes. People change. Situations change. The principles and character of God do not change, but the applications do change.

“For I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6) and “The Lord has sworn and will not change…” (Psalm 110:4)

There is “no shadow of turning” in God, the Scriptures are clear. (James 1:17) But, have you ever wondered this?

  • Why does the nature and character of the Lord seem so different between the Old Testament and the New Testament?
  • Has God changed His mind about some sins since the punishments are no longer seen, like the earth opening up?

When Jesus gave His life to die for sin and then broke the punishment of death by rising from the dead, nothing changed in God’s perspective of sin, but the application of the punishment was poured onto Jesus.

For those who choose to continue on in sin, nothing has changed because God’s perspective of sin has not changed. But for those in Christ, the punishment no longer applies!

he will not grow weary scripture

Since the beginning of time the enemy has tried to tempt people to doubt God and His Words. Why? Because your enemy understands the power of God’s Word even better than you do!

God cannot lie. The Bible is clear. That means if He speaks, He WILL do it. You don’t have to. HE WILL.

  • “Also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent. For He is not a man, that He should repent.” (1 Samuel 15:29, Numbers 23:19)
  • “So that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.” (Hebrews 6:18)

The Lord keeps every Word of His, however, when you are in a rough season, you cannot just grab any Scripture from the Bible and demand God fulfill it. That’s not how God works at all! God is a Holy King, not a servant to be commanded around.

However, when you are in a season of waiting or searching or darkness, seek the Lord for a promise you can stand on and the Holy Spirit will communicate one to you through God’s Word as you seek. And because God cannot lie, you know you can trust Him to keep His promise to you!

In the beginning, when God said, “Let there be light,” (Genesis 1:3) the sun had not yet been created, so where did that LIGHT come from?

The light “in the beginning” was the light of the glorious presence of God.

“God is LIGHT,” John wrote. “And in Him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5, MEV)

In this world, there is nothing but darkness and if it weren’t for Christians, the darkness would consume everyone, but as you lean into knowing God more, you’ll reflect the light of the Lord into that darkness.

The only way you can do that is by remaining close to Him.

Scripturally speaking, a TEST is not the same thing as being tempted. As you navigate your life, you’ll experience innumerable trials, testings, and temptations. But God has nothing to do with evil things, so He would never tempt you into sin “just to see” if you’ll pass the test!

“Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil; neither does He tempt anyone.” (James 1:13)

If you are walking through a season of difficulty in your life, you need to seek the Lord to see if you’re struggling with a fleshly desire, an evil temptation because of sin, or if you’re walking through a season in the “Refiner’s Fire”.

When you’re being tested and refined by the Lord, it is for a godly purpose: To expose the flaws in order to make you stronger.

Remember: Only the enemy will try to tempt you to stumble into sin. The Lord will only test your flesh to see if you’re ready to sacrifice it.

Only the enemy will try to tempt you to stumble into sin. The Lord will only test your flesh to see if you’re ready to sacrifice it.

The Lord is always speaking – even if you can’t hear it. The primary way God speaks is through His Word, and He PROMISED that if you would seek Him, you would find Him. (Matthew 7:7)

“Our God will come, and will not keep silent.” (Psalm 50:3)

When you can’t hear the voice of the Lord speaking, don’t assume He isn’t speaking.

  • You have an enemy that is fighting against the words of God in your life. (See Daniel 10:12)
  • Your enemy wants to twist God’s words.
  • Your enemy wants you to doubt that God can hear you.
  • Your enemy wants you to stop listening altogether.

You may need a season where you close in and quiet yourself, turn off the distractions to fast and pray because within your spirit the Holy Spirit dwells. If you want to hear from the Lord, draw closer to where He is and wait for Him there. (Psalm 37:7)

GOD IS NOT MAD AT YOU.

  • Maybe you’ve sinned.
  • Maybe you’ve wandered from the Lord.
  • Maybe you’ve turned your back on Him.
  • Maybe your passion has grown cold.
  • Maybe you’ve been caught up in empty religious acts with no real relationship with the Lord.

The prophet Isaiah said:

“All of us like sheep have gone astray; each of us has turned to his own way, but the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)

In Romans 3:11-12 Paul wrote:

“There is none righteous, no, not one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become worthless, there is no one who does good, no, not one.”

“Nevertheless I will not remove My lovingkindness from him nor be false in My faithfulness.” (Psalm 89:33)

The Lord already knows your true spiritual condition even better than you do. And He’s still not mad at you! God’s wrath toward sin remains firmly in place, but for those who come to Him through His Son, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

Thought for today: Knowing God More Means Knowing Yourself More too

When you are struggling, or when you need a fresh Word from the Lord, or a promise to stand on, or help in times of trouble- remember who God is not, and who God is will shine through!

Knowing God more will take the rest of your life, but as you continually worship Him, commune with Him through prayer and seek Him in His Word, the more He will reveal of Himself by the power of His Holy Spirit.

Part of getting to a place of deeper intimacy with the Lord is knowing Him more – just like with any other relationships in your life!

The more you put into your relationship with the Lord, the more you will get out of it– including a stronger connection to Him. How do you do that?

Bible in year

You must draw near to the Lord from within your spirit through a personal discipline of praise, prayer and the power of God’s Word. That is “the secret place” where you will find strength, perspective, wisdom and understanding and everything else you need to weather the storms of life.

It is the stronger connection with the Spirit of God that will sustain you in hard times, give you strength in your battle seasons, provide wisdom, insight and guidance when you don’t know what to do, or which way to turn.

Scripturally speaking, there isn’t “more” of God to be had- He’s given you everything He has, and you have access to it all through His Son, Jesus Christ, meaning that knowing God more originates with you.
