The fallen world has become obsessed with redefining what “love” really means, attempting to separate love from God- but that cannot be! “God is love,” John wrote. (1 John 4) God is the embodiment of love. Love is His inherent nature and state of existence. When the world says “love is love”, they misunderstand what love truly is. Love cannot exist apart from God. The fact that human beings – saved or unsaved – can experience love at all is because of the great mercy, goodness and compassion of God, who is love. If “love” originates within the human heart, it will always be flawed, self-serving, conditional and temporal. But love that originates and remains in Christ has eternal staying power because our God is eternal.
As the world separates love from God, the cracks begin to show- fear, hatred, despair and hopelessness and sin wreak havoc on the mind and heart. Why? Because, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end.” (Lam. 3:22 esv) Don’t buy into the lie! Love that originates apart from God is false, flawed and will always fail. The sinful cannot understand God’s great love for them, and they struggle with self-loathing. The sinful world cannot understand that, because of His love, He made them in the image of HIs beloved Son, Jesus, but without understanding that, they wander aimlessly without their true identity or they mutilate themselves or try to find love in the wrong places. Satan wants to prevent you from understanding God’s great love for you so that you never know who you really are.
The Steadfast Love of the Lord Doesn’t Change, Even if You Do
Remember that “.. neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities nor powers, neither things present nor things to come, neither height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 8:38-39) But if you struggle to understand and accept God’s unconditional love for you, how will the world ever know His love? The love of God is “steadfast”, the Bible says. It doesn’t change- even if you do. It doesn’t give up- even if you do. Because He is love. The Lord cannot exist any other way toward you, because love is who He is.
Contrary to what the world will say, love is not the answer. In order for the steadfast love of the Lord to triumph over the fear and hate that drives the fallen world, the world doesn’t need more love. The world needs God, through His Son, Jesus Christ. Because He is love, He draws you to Himself. He desires to be close to you. He wants you to know Him more and for you to invite Him to search you and know you more. You are accepted. You are desired. You are forgiven. You are worthy. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:16-17)
Thought for Today: Because He is Eternal, so is His Steadfast Love
Because of the pain we all experience in this world, the unloving actions, the fearful experiences- we all struggle to understand how God could really love us, especially when we sin. We judge ourselves unworthy of His love. That is a tactic of the enemy to disconnect you from God’s presence! When we sin, our first instinct is to run from God, but He wants you to run to Him! He loves you! The steadfast love of the Lord for you never ceases! The only way to truly begin to grasp the love of the Lord for you is to spend more time in His presence through praise and worship; to learn more about who He really is as shown in His Word; to commune with Him through prayer. The human mind cannot understand, but the spirit inside of you can. Satan will try, for the rest of your life, to disconnect you from the presence of God, to make you think you’re not worthy or deserving of His love or to make you afraid that something you did could make that love end. Not so!
A lifestyle of worship is a spiritual discipline, a foundation built upon the faith that God loves you, and in return, you worship Him, you thank Him daily, you remember Him, you lift His name high, you present your body as a “living sacrifice” to Him… not because He’ll stop loving you, but because He loved you first, and that steadfast love will never change.
“O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart.” (2 Chron. 6:14)
“How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” (Psalm 36:7)
“But You, O God my Lord, deal on my behalf for Your name’s sake; because Your steadfast love is good, deliver me!” (Psalm 109:21)
“Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of His inheritance? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in steadfast love.” (Micah 7:8)
