Everyone walks through seasons when the enemy comes in like a flood and upends everything. It’s easy to look around and see how hard it all is, to feel overwhelmed by the raging waters, the wind and the rain. Living through a “flood” season feels like it is draining all of your spiritual and emotional strength, but that will not happen if you continually replenish your spirit. Staying connected to the Spirit of God will be what keeps your head above water and means spending time in His presence in worship, strengthening your faith roots through His Word and communing with Him daily in prayer. The floods will come and go, but they don’t have to destroy your life if you’re anchored to the Solid Rock!
Isaiah spoke a prophetic word of the Lord about the Redeemer of Zion, Jesus Christ saying, “…when the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.” (Isaiah 59:19) The word “when” ensures that the enemy will come in, he will attempt to rattle you and shake your faith with troubles of every kind and on every side and in the world through conspiracy theories and “wars and rumors of wars”- but he is not stronger than the Lord! One of the biggest lies the enemy will try to get you to accept and believe is that he is more powerful than the King over the Flood!
When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Lord will show Himself to be your rock and He will provide for you higher ground upon which to stand or dry ground upon which to walk.
When the Enemy Comes in Like a Flood, Anchor Down!
- In Psalm 74:15, Asaph wrote, “You split the fountain and the flood; You dried up ever-flowing rivers.”
- Psalm 66:5-6 says, “Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doings toward mankind. He turned the sea into dry land; they crossed the river on foot; there we rejoiced in Him.”
- Psalm 29 says this: “The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is over many waters… The Lord sits enthroned above the flood, the Lord sits as King forever. The Lord will give strength to His people; the Lord will bless His people with peace.” (v.3, 10-11)
David called the Lord “the Rock that is higher than I” and “the Rock of my Salvation” – and leaned heavily on those promises through the many storms of his life. That doesn’t make the experience of the storm less violent or raging, but the promise you have through Christ is that you have a foundation upon which to stand so you will not be shaken. When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Lord will show Himself to be your rock and He will provide for you higher ground upon which to stand or dry ground upon which to walk. Amen!
Satan absolutely and unequivocally fears the name of the Lord. His name is Jesus! From the rising of the sun, each day, the enemy is terrified of the glory of God. Why? Because you are changed and transformed into the image of God “from glory to glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18) as you behold Him in His presence: WORSHIP. This is why the enemy wants you to fear the flood, when in reality the King over the flood is on your side!
Thought for today: Prepare for the Day When the Enemy Comes in Like a Flood
The only time in the Bible that God uses a flood to accomplish His purposes is in the destruction of sin. He did not send a flood into your life to teach you anything – the enemy wants to “steal, kill and destroy” (John 10:10) – God has raised up a standard against Satan- Jesus Christ! The Solid Rock! Psalm 77:16-19 says, “The waters saw You, O God. The waters saw You; they were afraid; the depths also trembled. The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered. Your arrows flashed about. The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind, and Your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. Your way is through the sea, and Your path in the great waters, and your footsteps are not seen.” Never let Satan convince you that his flood is going to overpower you or destroy you. Anchor down onto the Rock! Your God beats a path through the great waters, like a flood, and He rages toward the enemy so hard and so fast that He doesn’t even leave a footprint. With you, through you, for you and to rescue you. No flood of Satan could ever match the power of the King over the Flood!
