Jesus Healed the Blind Man in Two Ways With One Touch

One of the most profound miracles Jesus ever did was to open the eyes of the blind. Throughout human history, blind people have been marginalized, mocked, rejected, stepped over, so when Jesus healed the blind man, it was a stunning move. In His day, the blind were beggars, outcasts and burdens to society, so why would He even notice? Because Jesus sees sickness through the lens of healing. Jesus sees death through the lens of life. Jesus sees opposition through the lens of opportunity for God’s glory. Jesus sees what we want through the lens of what we need. The Pharisees were so pious and “holy” under the law of Moses that they wouldn’t touch an unclean blind person, but Jesus had something to prove – that blindness comes in many forms.

In John chapter 9, Jesus healed the blind man that people assumed had done something to deserve his condition. This was a man everyone knew was blind, but instead of rejoicing at his healing, the Pharisees were furious. Why? The excuse they gave was that Jesus had broken the Sabbath, but really, they were angry because a “sinner” had received a miracle they didn’t think he deserved. The fact is, no one “deserves” anything from God. We cannot earn salvation, it is a free gift of God through faith. You cannot earn His love, it is freely given to all. And in return for His many freely given benefits (Psalm 103:2), we freely offer up ourselves as a “living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1), we worship the Lord because we want to “see” more of Him, and His presence is closest when we praise. (Psalm 22:3)

Jesus Healed the Blind Man So You Could See, Too

So often people who have seen Jesus Christ at work in their lives do not perceive Him with their spirit. Why does this happen? There are many reasons – like the trials and difficulties of life that get in the way, old ways of thinking that influence how we see things, what we’ve been taught or areas of spiritual stronghold, experiences and mindsets, among other things – that cause us to be blinded to who Jesus Christ is. It’s not a sin to be blind, but it why stay blind when Jesus wants to heal you so you can see Him?

The Pharisees were trapped in tradition and religion and operated under a “legal” sense of purity while a miracle from God had been given to a lowly, unintelligent, unclean blind sinner. Then they insulted him and said, ‘You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. We know that God has spoken to Moses. As for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.‘” (John 9:28-29) With Jesus, there were no caveats except one: “Do you want to be well?” The Pharisees dismissed the man because he was physically blinded, but he saw something they could not- and that is what drew Jesus’ attention. They rejected the man for being wretched, miserable, poor and blind, yet Jesus saw something different because His spiritual eyes were opened, and He was seeking for those who were seeking Him. In fact, the Pharisees had been fully aware of every prophecy ever made about Christ, yet they missed Him and a blind man was able to see what they could not!

The Pharisees dismissed the man because he was physically blinded, but he saw something they could not- and that is what drew Jesus’ attention.

The blind man understood a spiritual principle that so many of us miss and, after the Lord opened his eyes, Jesus wanted to know if He would like his spiritual eyes open too. Do you believe in the Son of God?” Plenty of people believe in Jesus, but the formerly blind man asked an important question many assume they know the answer to: Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?” Jesus said to him, ‘You have seen Him, and it is He who speaks with you.” Then he said, ‘Lord, I believe.’ And he worshipped Him.” Two types of blindness affect the world: physical and spiritual. Not everyone is born physically blind, but everyone is born spiritually blind and while the enemy wants to keep you blinded, Jesus Christ came to open the eyes of your heart.

Thought for today: Spiritual Blindness is the True Sickness

You have seen Jesus, as many have. He is always working on your behalf to fulfill every one of the promises God ever made in His Word. Paul wrote, “For all the promises of God are ‘Yes!’ and in Christ, “Amen!” to the glory of God.” (2 Corinthians 1:20) Many have had their “blind eyes” opened yet still walk in blindness, stuck in habits, inhibitions, religious trappings, traditions and spiritual immaturity or ignorance. “It is He who speaks with you…” Jesus said to the man. Have your eyes been opened to see Jesus right now, today, in your situation, in your life, in your areas of struggle and darkness? He’s there!! He’s moving and working and touching and healing and doing all the things He said He’d do, but many don’t have eyes to see it. Jesus desires to display the works of God in you (John 9:3), but first, you’ll need to recognize where you’ve been blind and let Jesus open your eyes to see Him. If you want to see more of Jesus in your life. it’s not that you need “more” of Him, but that you must give Him more of you so, WORSHIP HIM!

“Then [the blind man] said, ‘Lord, I believe.’ And he worshipped Him….” (John 9:38) Here’s something else the blind man knew, without anyone ever telling Him: Worship is the natural response of a grateful heart. If Jesus has opened your eyes, worship Him! If you need your eyes opened more, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you are blind and invite Him to open your eyes and worship Him! Jesus wants to show the world the glory of God through the healing of your blindness… Are you ready for what wonders will He show you?
