What will He prove about you?

So many times in our journey with the Lord it seems like we live in a state of existence that hovers somewhere between seeing “nothing” through the eyes of faith and not despising the “day of small beginnings”, doesn’t it? The only things we can “prove” are the invisible things that the eyes of faith can see, while the natural manifestation doesn’t happen right where and when we’d like it to. Yet, we keep our eyes on “the one who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27) and keep on going!

Throughout the Scriptures, it is very, very clear that the Lord “proves” His people, which means that He examines us, tests us, investigates and scrutinizes us over and over. Do you know why? Why can’t He just test us once and realize we’re all set once we pass the test?! Because every, single season we experience in life changes us – for better or for worse – and with each situation, the Lord needs to examine us once again to “prove” and “try” the heart. Does the Lord already know your heart? Of course! But the Lord tests the heart not for His own benefit and information, but for yours. You need to know your own heart for “out of flows everything that pertains to life” (Proverbs 4:23) and the “proving” or testing method is how the Lord shows you who you really are. Wow!

If you invite the Lord to show you who you really are, you may not like what you see, but if you can trust His vision and perspective then He will show you great things!

With this revelation, David wrote, Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my concerns, and see if there is any rebellious way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.” (Psalm 139:23-24) He said, “I know, my God, that You test the heart, and with uprightness You are pleased, so in the uprightness of my heart I have offered freely all these things.” (1 Chronicles 29:17) David was an imperfect person who made many mistakes, and yet, amid trials of every kind, he completely trusted God in the testing process, saying, Examine me, O Lord, and test me; try my affections and my heart. For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes, and I have walked in Your truth.” (Psalm 26:2-3)

In the book of Zechariah, the Lord speaks prophetically about what will happen after the death of Jesus Christ, the scattered and the persecution and yet He said,And I will bring those who remain into the fire and will refine them as the refinement of silver, and will test them as the testing of gold. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are My people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.'” (Zechariah 13:7-9) You are among those who remain after Calvary and the Lord desires your testimony of “The Lord is my God!” Expect that there will be process of testing, refining and “proving” that you’ll undergo in the Master’s hand. But only at your invitation will He test and prove you. Don’t worry about passing the test – you will, with His help. Remember, if God puts you to the test, God will help you pass it!

Thought for today

God does not “test” every Christian – did you know that? Many people wrongly think they’re being “tested and tried” when really they’re just living out the natural consequences of their decisions. And sometimes there is injustice in the world that we experience, which God will “work out for good” as you walk according to His purposes and not your own. Those are not the same thing! Being tested and tried by the Lord is an invitation-only experience where you invite the Lord to show you who you really are – and then He does, using whatever means He sees fit to use. Do you trust Him? Then don’t be afraid to ask!! David’s willingness to be tested at every moment of his life was a sign of his humility before the Lord. He was a great king and yet he bowed before the King of Kings, inviting Him to do whatever it would take to expose him over and over. What courage that takes! If you invite the Lord to show you who you really are, you may not like what you see, but if you can trust His vision and perspective then He will show you great things!
