Because of the power of the spiritual darkness in the world which has permeated all of the natural, human experience, Christians are often inundated with messages of darkness that are so commonplace they’re easy to miss. We say and do things that we don’t realize are part of the Kingdom of Man, even using the language of spiritual darkness when we don’t intend to. For example, how about this every day expressions? “It’s just not in the cards for me right now.” Did you ever realize that is a reference to Tarot card reading? How about words like “witch hunt“, or “the witching hour“? How about something like, “You’ll curse the day you were born?” These types of expressions and others like them have their origins in outdated and ignorant religious beliefs when people who thought they were religious really had a mixture of rudimentary Bible knowledge and a deeper knowledge of the spiritual darkness of the world they lived in.
Even today, many Christians worry about things like the power of a curse, or even bad luck, if someone decided to get serious and target them for evil reasons. If it’s ever crossed your mind to toss salt over your shoulder, or knock on wood or if you break a mirror and say it’s bad luck, you know what I mean! Is there any real power there? You might say “No!” but if you look back over your life, you’ll realize that the enemy is a master at combining coincidence and fear so he can get into your head, isn’t he? He would love nothing more than for you to think he has real spiritual power, but because of Jesus Christ, Satan has nothing more over you than you give him! Proverbs 26:2 says, “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.” Have you done something to deserve a curse…? YES. We all have! It’s called sin.
If you look back over your life, you’ll realize that the enemy is a master at combining coincidence and fear so he can get into your head.
However, the curse of sin – death – was paid for by Jesus Christ. If you are in Christ, you are spiritually protected from any curse that a mere human could ever conjure up on you. “Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When He was hung on the cross, He took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.‘” (Galatians 3:13) Jesus Christ broke the power of every curse, or hex or voodoo or act of witchcraft you have ever been involved in. He broke all power of spiritual darkness of any kind and as long as you are walk in the light as He is in the light, you are spiritually untouchable by any kind demonic power levied against you by another person. Now, it’s time to walk in faith and use your spiritual weapons to combat the enemy’s lies about your past. There is no greater spiritual power in existence than the Lord.
Thought for today
The real power of a curse is directly tied to sin. Remember, Jesus took all curses upon Himself and broke them when He rose from death. You no longer “deserve” a curse, so it has no spiritually legal effect over you. There is a true spiritual power of darkness that is very real in this world. There are people who deliberately traffic in darkness and some of those people have “magical” “powers” that are really demonic forces who give them a false sense of spiritual authority so they’ll continue to submit to Satan. This is why you must stay in the light. Depart from any kind of spiritual darkness, even if it is fun, cute or seems “harmless”. You don’t have to fear a curse, or dark spiritual powers – ever. You don’t even need to fear Satan. Simply walk in the light as He is in the light! Stay close to Him, friends! Worship, the Word, the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, prayer, fellowship with other believers. Surround yourself with light!
“…God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7)
“You are of God, little children, and have overcome [the enemy], because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)
