How the Blessings of God Go Beyond the Curse

Everyone who is saved through faith in Jesus Christ is covered by, “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,” (Ephesians 1:3) and the supernatural blessings of God go beyond any spiritual curse, but that doesn’t mean the Adversary of God, the enemy of your soul (Psalm 143:3) won’t try to trap you in the many curses that the fallen world experiences.

In God’s eyes, being blessed or curse is not in question. You are BLESSED through Christ. But being blessed doesn’t mean you have no problems. Of course not! Jesus said that as long as you live in the world, there would be troubles to overcome with His strength. (John 16:33) How can you know you’re living in the blessings of God when you feel the world’s curses try to overtake you? You must define “blessing” like God does in His Word!

God doesn’t define blessed and cursed like you do, and whether you trust in God’s Word or your own experiences will influence how you behave in the face of tough circumstances. You are blessed with the uncommon, supernatural ability to overcome every trial you face. The world may try to “curse” you, but God says you are blessed!

The Power of Curses Cannot Overcome the Blessings of God in Christ

Plenty of Christians still struggle with doubt and fear and worry about the power of curses, or even bad luck because your enemy is a master at combining coincidence and fear so he can get into your head. He would love nothing more than for you to think he has real spiritual power, but because of Jesus Christ, Satan has nothing more over you than you give him!

Proverbs 26:2 says, “…an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.” But have you done something to deserve a curse? Yes, everyone has – It’s called sin. 

However, the power of the curse of sin – death – was paid for by Jesus Christ. If you are in Christ, you are spiritually protected from the power of any curse and no human or “high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God” could ever put one on you. You have the authority to cast those things down in the name of Jesus! (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

“Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When He was hung on the cross, He took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing…” (Galatians 3:13) Jesus Christ broke the power of every curse, or hex or voodoo or act of witchcraft you have ever been involved in – but there is a catch.

Jesus broke all the power of every curse of spiritual darkness of any kind…As you are walking in the light as He is in the light because “there is no darkness in Him.” (1 John 1:5) That is when you are spiritually untouchable by any kind demonic power levied against you.

You must walk in faith and use your spiritual weapons to combat the enemy’s lies about the blessings of God. There is no greater spiritual power in existence than the Lord God Almighty.

The Truth about How You’ll Experience the Blessings of God

Many mistakenly believe that the blessings of God are tied to good behavior, or that ‘curses’ are tied to bad behavior. However, in the Bible, it is clear that – in the Old Covenant – the blessings of God are tied to obedience and in the New Covenant blessings are also tied to godliness. Here are just a few examples from Scripture:

• “Blessed is the man [whose] delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night...” (Psalm 1:2-3)
• “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord [he] shall not fear when heat comes… and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
• Psalm 112:1 says, “Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments.”
• James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he is tried, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
• Matthew 5:3-12 says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [and] Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted [and] Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”
• Psalm 84:5 says, “…blessed is the man whose strength is in You…”

The Truth About the Power of Curses in the Life of a Believer

Maybe life has made you feel cursed – cursed with health issues; cursed with family problems; cursed with a disability; cursed with addiction; cursed with being overweight; cursed with poverty; cursed with a sinful sexual attraction – And yet God calls you blessed! You’ll always have obstacles to overcome, but that’s the nature of the fallen world you live in.

The real power of a curse is directly tied to sin, so if you’re feeling cursed – you have power through Christ to be free from that lie.

However, there is a true spiritual power of darkness that is very real in this world. There are people who deliberately traffic in darkness and some of those people have “magical” “powers” that are really demonic forces who give them a false sense of spiritual authority so they’ll continue to submit to Satan. This is why you must stay in the light. 

“…I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.”

~ Deuteronomy 30:19

Depart from any kind of spiritual darkness, even if it is fun, cute or seems “harmless” – it isn’t! You don’t have to fear Satan or a curse, or dark spiritual powers, but definitely don’t leave the door open for them!

Simply walk in the light as He is in the light! Stay close to the Lord in worship, the Word, the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, prayer, fellowship with other believers. Surround yourself with light!

Jeremiah 17:5-6 says, “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart departs from the Lord. For he will be like a bush in the desert and will not see when good comes,
but will inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.”

“The bush in the desert” is the person who is still trying on their own strength, still relying on their own resources and experiences and wisdom to navigate through life.

The believer who shuns a lifestyle of worship, who dapples in the darkness, who “draws near to the Lord” with their lips and not their heart (Isaiah 29:13), the one who goes through the motions of faith will soon find that they are dead and dry on the inside, living a life that moves from one lost battle to the next, endlessly victimized by Satan.

Remember that Proverbs 26:2 says, “…a curse that is causeless does not alight.” (ESV)

You Cannot Curse What God Has Blessed

In the book of Numbers, Balaam, a prophet, was hired by King Balak of Moab to speak a curse over God’s people. However, once Balaam sought the Lord, here’s the message God gave him for the king:

“But how can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I condemn those whom the Lord has not condemned? I see them from the cliff tops; I watch them from the hills. I see a people who live by themselves, set apart from other nations.” (Numbers 8:8-9)

In other words, no man can curse what God has blessed – that’s you! But, of course, King Balak of Moab wanted to curse God’s people and once again he was informed of the truth:

“God has blessed, and I cannot reverse it! No misfortune is in His plan for Jacob; no trouble is in store for Israel. For the Lord their God is with them; He has been proclaimed their king…No curse can touch Jacob; no magic has any power against Israel.” (Numbers 8:19-23)

So, think about it again: Are you blessed or cursed? Sure, people might come against you more than once and try to make you feel cursed, as the king did to God’s people – he tried twice – but God pushed back, TWICE. In God’s eyes, you are blessed. Regardless of what you feel – worship Him today because He has blessed you!

Thought for today: Satan Brings a Curse, Jesus Became the Curse

Remember that no one can curse what God has blessed! Living a life that is blessed or cursed is all a matter of your perspective. Do you have God’s perspective of your life? Are you defining your situations the way He does? The truth of God’s Word (which is the only source of truth in existence) states over and over that that you are blessed by God.

“All who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,” Paul wrote. (2 Timothy 3:12) Yet amid all of this, you are blessed! You have Jesus and He has overcome the world and all of its evils! Don’t look at life through the natural eye. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Ask God show you what He sees in your life’s circumstances and to show you where you are blessed.

Satan’s strategy is to keep you so focused on running around chasing natural things that you are burnt out and have nothing left in your faith to walk in the supernatural. 

When you pray, seek and hold onto the Word, fast and worship, you are inviting Him to move on earth and you become His agent of change! Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you’re not living a life of blessing because you’re not rich or because you’re experiencing trials. You are blessed with the uncommon, supernatural ability to overcome every trial you face.

The world may try to “curse” you, but God says you are blessed! You live in a counter-culture of FAITH which means that even when you don’t see it – you are blessed of God!
