Throughout all the different seasons in life, we ask the Lord for many things – for His help, provision, comfort, protection, guidance, wisdom and so much more. It is alright to ask the Lord to bring you success (Psalm 118:25), or to bless you (2 Samuel 7:29) or expand your sphere of influence or even to keep you from causing others harm, as Jabez did (1 Chronicles 4:9-10). If these are the things that will bring God glory, and He has led you to ask, then ask! “Let him ask,” James wrote. But here are the two most important words in James 1:6 about asking God for what you need, or even what you want, according to His will: without wavering.
When you bring a request to the Lord, you must stand and remain firm in your faith for the answer. For how long? For as long as it takes! Don’t waver in the knowledge that where God guides, God provides; that He desires to fulfill the godly longings of your heart because He put them there in the first place! However, so often it happens that the longer we wait, the more we waver! Did I really pray according to God’s will? Is this something He wants to do? Is this something He can do?! I can’t see how! Maybe I’ve missed God! We waver. We wonder. We worry.
When you bring a request to the Lord, you must stand and remain firm in your faith for the answer. For how long? For as long as it takes!
James wrote, “For he who wavers is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. Let not that man thing he will receive anything from the Lord.” (James 1:6-7) The word “tossed” in this verse means, “a person whose mind struggles in uncertainty, between hope and fear.” Is that you? The enemy will try to get you to waver in your faith as you wait on the Lord so that you look at your circumstances and take your eyes off of the Him. He wants you confuse and rattle you, and bog you down with doubts and shipwreck your faith so that you can’t receive from the Lord; so that when your answer arrives, you aren’t in a place where God can hand it over to you because you threw up your hands and walked away! “Without wavering“, ask. God’s got you.
Thought for today
“The Lord is at hand,” Paul wrote. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with gratitude, make your requests known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Did you catch that? The Lord is at hand. “…make your requests known to God.” Does He already know what you want or need? Of course. For those who are in Christ, walking according to His will, speaking the language of His Word, the Lord leads us to make requests in faith. He wants you to! Why? So He can prove Himself to you over and over and over. So that, “…your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tried by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:7) Ask. Trust God. Don’t waver.
