One of the best things you can do for your family is instill in them a love and respect for the Lord. Leading by example is the most powerful way to raise up individuals who will take what they have learned and add to it, grow it and expand it in the Kingdom of God. Steven Covey once said, “What you do has far greater impact that what you say.” Your family is watching. If you’re a mother, a father, a sister or brother, a daughter or son or cousin – it doesn’t matter! You can still set the example for godliness to everyone in your family, just as David did. David was the least in his family, yet he was the one chosen to lead God’s people because God saw in David a heart that would worship Him.
A lifestyle of worship is lived behind closed doors, where only your family can see you, the real you.
Psalm 145:4-6 says, “One generation shall praise Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious honor of Your majesty and of Your wondrous works. They shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness.” Did you catch that? If “I” will speak glory to God, then “they” will speak of His mighty acts. Your example of worship will ignite others to do the same! Maybe it won’t happen today, but it will happen because Psalm 22:27 says, “All the ends of the world will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will worship before You.”
Someday, when your kids, or your spouse, or your parents or the people in your family reach a place of brokenness- they will remember you. And because of you, they will remember Jesus. They may even reach out to you. Your example of worship is a seed planted, every time, in every circumstance. Families that worship together, win together! But this beautiful miracle within a family isn’t a random occurrence. Worshipping families are cultivated, grown, pruned, nourished, tended to and watered with the Word. You must set an example of worship to children, especially- any children that you love in your life. Children have very open hearts before the Lord and living out loud in your worship will cause them to have the natural desire to do the same. There will be times when you’ll feel you have your work cut out for you, but God is faithful!
Thought for today
Instilling a heart of worship into the next generation doesn’t meant just putting Christian songs on the radio while you’re driving to soccer practice or even worshipping at church on Sundays. A lifestyle of worship is lived behind closed doors, where only your family can see you, the real you- the words you speak, how you respond in your faith, and the way you worship (or not!) in times of joy, sadness, weakness, confusion, triumph and everything else. It won’t always be easy, especially when you’re walking in turbulent waters, but your family is watching you. They are learning from you. They need you to win the daily fight of faith so someday when they are in their own battles, they will remember your example and follow in your footsteps. Live your life as a worship minister to the Lord and your family will grow up and do the same!
