Do you trust in What’s-His-Name?
Do you know God’s name? HisΒ actualΒ name? To know God’s name is to know Him, but did you know that He has more than one name? The Bible records literally hundreds of names of God and each one describes a different aspect of His character. God is so vast and unknowable that the best way He could help our limited human minds “understand” Him is through His names. The Lamb of God. The Lion of Judah. El Shaddai. Jehovah Jireh. Yahweh. The Shepherd. The King. The Righteous Judge. The Light of the World. The Rock. Our Ever-Present Help. The Bread of Life. Living Water. The Spirit of Truth. The Son of God. The Prince of Peace. Wonderful. The Word. Counselor. Mighty God. King of Kings. Everlasting Father. Messiah.Β
When David wrote, “Those who know Your name will put their trust in You” he was speaking an incredibly profound word about the journey of those who love the Lord. We trust God on a broader level, but more deeply, moreΒ specifically,Β our trust in Him is based on our understanding of what He can do in our specific situation. Yes, He is the creator of the world, but more specifically, He is Jehovah Rophe, “Healing”. Yes, He is the King of Kings, but more specifically He is Jehovah Shalom, “Peace” personified. There is only one way to get to know God more- through His Word. Every name of God meets a need thatΒ you have. Do you know His name(s)?
In each season of your life, when you seek Him, He will reveal His name, His character to you in a fresh way that will provide exactly what you need to press onward into victory.
The Word of God will provide light when the path is dark and you don’t know which way to go (Psalm 119:105). When you feel at a loss, or are stuck in a season of difficulty, or you’ve been given an impossible diagnosis or you’ve lost everything, or you need help knowing which way to go, you need to know His name so you can put your trust in Him.
Thought for today
When you want more of God, learn His name. In each season of your life, when you seek Him, He will reveal His name, His character to you in a fresh way that will provide exactly what you need to press onward into victory. Then, your response in faith is to thank Him, to worship Him as though your need is already met. Worship God, your Healer. Worship Him, your Vindication. Worship the Lord, your Strong Tower. Worship the Mighty Warrior who stands with you, ready to do battle (Psalm 110:5). The victory that overcomes the world is our faith, John wrote (1 John 5:4). Worship God, according to the name He has revealed to you and your faith will prove Him worthy of your trust!
