When our worship is based upon the Word of God, it is a faith-building strategy! This is just one reason why His Word must be the foundation for all worship. You’ll face many attacks from all sides in life, but God has equipped every believer with the weapons that will overcome all enemies. Worship is a primary weapon of spiritual warfare, and it is “mighty through God for the pulling down of strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:14). When the Word of God, which is a quick, powerful, sharp sword, is sung as the lyrics of your worship, your worship then becomes a weapon with which you can attack enemies and defend yourself against attacks.
You already know Satan is going to attack you. He is actively seeking you now! (1 Peter 5:8) Are you prepared? He only attacks where it will hurt the most, and has the most potential for damage- your marriage, the lives of your kids, your money, your health. It’s unscriptural to say that “God will never give you more than you can bear”- because God is only good and to imply that God’s goodness is limited by your pain is wrong thinking. However, you can be certain that this sinful, fallen world, and your enemy, Satan, will send unbearable circumstances into your life! The enemy hates God’s presence and he doesn’t want you in it, so he downplays the power of worship because he knows how volatile it is against him, especially when it’s based on God’s own Word.
When the Word of God, which is a quick, powerful, sharp sword, is sung as the lyrics of your worship, your worship then becomes a weapon with which you can attack enemies and defend yourself against attacks.
Does that mean you can never write your own worship songs? Not at all! Psalms is an entire book of original worship music. However, the Word of God must be the foundation of what you sing and write. Everything sung in worship should be in agreement with the Word and based on what His Word says about who He is and what He has done. When you speak to God His very own words, using them to glorify Him, He honors His Word and backs it up with the authority of His name. That’s a powerful weapon indeed!

Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” You can’t wait until you need faith to get faith. Get into the habit of daily, thankful worship now, singing the Word, and when trials come (and you know they will!), you will be an expert at wielding your weapon.
